Background

Base10 Partners is a technology investment firm that invests in founders and companies that automate "real economy" sectors, such as food, retail, logistics, and fintech, with the aim of solving problems for the 99%. They believe positive impact is key to profit and give back by donating 50% of their gain to create scholarships for underrepresented students through their Advancement Initiative Fund. Base10 holds the distinction of being the first black-led VC to reach the milestone of $1 billion AUM, and has invested in notable companies like Figma, Notion, Brex, Nubank, Plaid, and Stripe.

Challenge

When Stackmatix first engaged with Base10 in Q4 of 2021, we found that Base10 had a limited social media presence without clear guidance on their brand positioning or how to effectively utilize social channels to communicate their vision and mission. Stackmatix's organic social team stepped in to help Base10 refine their social branding, personality, and voice, and create a strategy to establish a credible social media footprint that would help to amplify the awareness of their efforts to support founders, create positive impact in the venture industry, and create compelling original research in software and technology trends.

Solution

We started by guiding the Base10 team on content pillars that captured Base10’s focus and aligned with their target audience of the venture and startup ecosystems. We performed a deep dive analysis of their social media, communications, and marketing efforts to date, learned about their portfolio companies and investing approaches, and engaged in numerous dialogues with different stakeholders to capture their perspectives and ideas. We conducted a competitive analysis on other top venture capital firms to help discover not just effective content and messaging tactics in the space, but also identify how to differentiate Base10’s unique positioning and voice within their niche.

Using the insights gathered from this research, Stackmatix developed a holistic content strategy to create a consistent stream of content across their preferred platforms (LinkedIn and Twitter) and media types (images, video, carousels, graphics, and copywriting) that would appeal to Base10's audience and drive social awareness of their brand. The content covered a wide range of topics, including promoting new initiatives, developing marketing campaigns, promoting portfolio companies, and establishing thought leadership (including of their unique research that results in their iconic market maps).

This new stream of content significantly increased Base10's social media presence on both Twitter and LinkedIn. Over the course of the year, we consistently developed and adapted the content strategy to the changing market and industry environments, social media algorithmic updates, new and developing toolsets that enabled new tactics, and Base10’s own evolving view of the landscape and how they wanted to message their vision within it.

Results

On Twitter, Stackmatix drove a 302% increase in impressions year-over-year, a 521% increase in engagements, and a 352% increase in shares, indicating the impactful and valuable content that resonated with audiences. On LinkedIn, Stackmatix drove a 563% increase in impressions, a 480% increase in total engagements, and a 55% increase in followers, growing and deepening connections with a diverse audience of potential partners, portfolio companies, employees, and the broader startup, tech, and business community.
